TV Series Guide 2015

HANNIBAL (JUNE 4, NBC)

NBC’s Hannibal, starring the excellent Mads Mikkelsen in the titular role, has had some difficulties generating the kind of audience that would secure its run on television for years to come, but that hasn’t stopped it from amassing a small and devoted following, and for good reason: Hannibal is one of the best dramas on television, and its second season was one long exercise in heightened tension. Expect the third season to continue the thrills and introduce some new characters from the Hannibal mythos.
SENSE8 (JUNE 5, NETFLIX)

It was only a matter of time before one of the major television networks of our time tackled science fiction again, and we are glad it was Netflix that rose to the challenge. Looking like a mix between The Matrix and David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, Sense8 is the brainchild of the Wachowski siblings (yes, of Matrix fame) and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Staczynski, and though details are scant – and, frankly, that’s a good thing – what we do know demonsrates that this might be the single most ambitious show airing this summer. And, best of all, because of Netflix’s viewing format, you can binge-watch the whole thing starting June 5th. Is anyone else praying for rain?
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (JUNE 12, NETFLIX)

Netflix hit it out of the park with their bold and original show about life in a women’s prison. The ensemble cast is among the most loveable on television, the writing is always on point and it has been pushing against television norms since its pilot. That 70s Show‘s Laura Prepon returns to Litchfield Penitentiary, where things are heating up. Expect big laughs and high drama from one of television’s most original shows.
CATASTROPHE (JUNE 19, AMAZON)

Ok, so Catastrophe not exactly new, in the sense that it aired in Britain earlier this year, but those of us across the pond looking to enjoy some good old fashion British humor have to wait until Amazon releases the show later this month. The premise seems like an odd one for comedy: a short, passionate fling turns, well, catastrophic, when the woman accidentally gets pregnant. Consider this the perfect rom-com to watch with your special someone.
TRUE DETECTIVE (JUNE 21, HBO)

The incredible popularity of the first season of HBO’s True Detective made one thing abundantly clear (actually, two things, if you count the McConaissance): the mini-series is here to stay. Can the second season of True Detective also resurrect the careers of Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell? They are joined by the beautiful and talented Rachel McAdams and the young Taylor Kitsch, who, come to think of it, could use another television hit.
BALLERS (JUNE 21, HBO)
What Entourage did for Hollywod (or at least men’s completely unrealistic fantasy version of Hollywood), Ballers promises to do for the sports world — hell, word is they’re both using the same theme song! So if you’re lacking some testosterone-fueled fun, or if you’d just like to escape to that ever popular fantasy of living the pro athlete dream,Ballers may be just what you’re looking for. And did we mention none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is headlining?
SUITS (JUNE 24, USA NETWORK)
Suits may just be the most beloved show on television, which is no small feat when you consider how dreary the very concept of the “billable hour” is. Much of the secret to its success lies in the razor-sharp dialogue and the cast’s incredible chemistry, chemistry that was jeopardized in the last season when Harvey Specter’s long-time secretary, confidante and “will they, won’t they” love interest Donna announced her decision to quit the firm.
